Research at the Institute of Turbomachinery and Fluid Dynamics

We as the Institute of Turbomachinery and Fluid Dynamics - (TFD), are working in five different research groups on the future of Aeroacoustics, Aeroelasticity and Wind Energy, Axial Turbines, Axial Compressors, Turbochargers and Centrifugal Compressors, as well as Multiphysics of Turbulent Flows. Through both publicly funded research projects and purely industry funded projects, we are researching the industry of tomorrow.

The unsteady interactions in turbomachinery enhancements are investigated experimentally and numerically at the TFD. Multidisciplinary issues increasingly come to the forefront of scientific interest, especially with respect to the development and optimization of highly complex systems such as aero engines or gas turbines, therefore by employing a close cooperation with national and international research institutions and industrial partners it is ensured that tasks will always be guided by current, practice-orientated issues. An overview of completed and ongoing projects can be found in the description of each research group.

Comprehensive experimental test facilities as well as different numerical methods and software solutions for design and simulation are available at the TFD for use in projects. With their own workshops the TFD is additionally equipped with expert knowledge required to develop and manufacture it’s own experimental prototypes, metrology/sensors and the instrumentation of testing benches.

Within the context of individual elaborate research assignments we gladly provide you with the expertise of our employees and offer you the opportunity to use the technical facilities (testing plants, machines, computing cluster) of the TFD. If you are interested in a common project please don’t hesitate to contact us.
