Research Projects

Design and investigation of centrifugal compressors and diffuser stages

Centrifugal compressors have a wide range of applications. They are used, for example, in power plants, in the process gas industry, in turbochargers and fuel cells. Depending on the area of application, different requirements are placed on pressure buildup, efficiency and map width. In the context of the energy revolution, transient operation is also playing an increasingly important role. In order to consider these requirements during design, an advanced understanding of the flow processes in a compressor stage is required. This is achieved on the one hand by detailed numerical studies and on the other hand by their validation on the basis of experimental investigations. In addition to extensive pressure and temperature measurements, this also includes optical measurement of flow fields using PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry). The knowledge gained is used to improve the design methodology.
