Potential Evaluation of a VTG Turbine

A PEM fuel cell requires a cathode air supply that provides pre-compressed air for efficient operation. The electrically driven turbocompressor required for this purpose is a major energy consumer. To increase the efficiency of the overall system, a radial turbine is used to recuperate mechanical energy from the low-enthalpy exhaust gas of the fuel cell and make it available to support the compressor. Fuel cells also require a throttle point to generate backpressure at the outlet in order to set the necessary operating pressure in the fuel cell stack. Variable turbine geometries are intended to provide this adjustability. In addition, variable turbine geometry increases the recuperated turbine power. In order to evaluate the potential of appropriate variable turbine geometries, map investigations using CFD simulations and experimental investigations are performed.
