Research Projects

Development of Design Methods for Small Wind Turbines

The design of small wind turbines is nowadays based on the methods developed for large wind turbines. The specific demands of small wind turbines are not or mostly not considered. For example, the lower heights of the hub and the slower rotational speed cause different inflow conditions and boundary layer properties respectively. Three-dimensional effects, appearing mostly at the rotor tip and root, influence a larger area (based on the rotor length) on the rotor blade compared to large wind turbines. The flow around small wind turbines is going to be simulated with the aid of CFD-Simulations of different fidelity to identify the different flow phenomena. These phenomena are going to be modelled in the existing design tools to improve the overall wind turbine design.
