Research Project

Influence of inlet geometries on the stage efficiency of centrifugal compressors

Due to the available installation space and bearing systems a radial inlet geometry is often selected for radial and axial compressors. In such cases, a suitable inlet geometry deflects the flow from the radial to the axial direction. The aim of the project is to design inlet geometries that achieve homogeneous and spin-free inflow conditions. At the TFD, numerical studies of different inlet geometries are being performed and these include the corresponding compressor stage. Of special interest are the investigation of the flow field, the resulting flow angles at the rotor’s inlet and the interaction between the inlet geometry and the compressor stage. Future work will cover the design of different inlet geometries and the influence of the main design parameters.
