Activities
- Turbochargers – centrifugal compressors and turbines
- Thermodynamic / Heat flow
Research Topics
By means of experimental investigations and coupled CHT-simulations (Conjugate Heat Transfer) a deeper understanding of the complex heat fluxes in the turbocharger and the interaction with the bearing system will be created. The thermal boundary conditions are determined by a bi-directional, iterative coupling of the calculation models for the journal and thrust bearings with the heat flow model, while taking the bearing dissipation in the overall heat balance into account. For the consideration of engine-induced axial vibrations of the rotor, the calculation methodology for the thrust bearing will be extended and validated by extensive experimental investigations. Thus, the transient pressure build-up can be detected as a result of load fluctuations and their influence on the dynamic bearing characteristics.
