Abstract

Research approaches for reducing the operating cost, the investment, and the maintenance expenses for stationary gas turbines are presented in this article. The operating expenses are reduced by increasing the compressor efficiency using a functional surface structure which is oriented in flow direction. The microscopic structures, also known as riblets, reduce the momentum losses in the turbulent boundary layer and therefore the profile losses. The reduction of investment is achieved by reducing the number of stages in a gas turbine. For this purpose, the specific stage loading must be improved which is achieved by raising the aerodynamic load. Therefore, the subject of a current research project is the control of the boundary layer separation near the profile trailing edge by active flow control and utilization of the Coanda effect for increased turning of the flow. A concept for the regeneration of gas turbines is presented which aims to improve the customer's benefit by reducing maintenance expenses. Within the planned collaborative research center "Regeneration of durable goods" new scientific fundamentals and research results for the systematic regeneration of gas turbines will be developed.
