The Institute for Turbomachinery and Fluid Dynamics - TFD has a long history in the research fields of thermal turbomachinery and classical fluid mechanics. By acquiring and working on other research fields, knowledge gained and methods developed are also transferred and synergies are exploited.

The Institute of Turbomachinery and Fluid Dynamics – TFD has a long history of work in research areas such as thermal turbomachinery and classical fluid mechanics. Currently at the TFD both publicly and industrially funded research projects in the fields of

  • axial machines
    • axial turbines
    • axial compressors
    • diffusers
  • radial machines
    • turbochargers
    • centrifugal compressors
  • aeroacoustics and aeroelasticity
    • acoustic transport
    • blade vibrations
  • numerical methods
    • Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)
    • Computational Aeroacoustics (CAA)

  • renewable energy systems
    • wind turbines
    • fuel cell systems
  • fluid mechanics
    • vortex dynamics
    • biomedical engineering

are in progress. The unsteady interactions in turbomachinery enhancements are investigated experimentally and numerically at the TFD. Multidisciplinary issues increasingly come to the forefront of scientific interest, especially with respect to the development and optimization of highly complex systems such as aero engines or gas turbines, therefore by employing a close cooperation with national and international research institutions and industrial partners it is ensured that tasks will always be guided by current, practice-orientated issues. An overview of completed and ongoing projects can be found in the description of each research group.

Comprehensive experimental test facilities as well as different numerical methods and software solutions for design and simulation are available at the TFD for use in projects. With their own workshops the TFD is additionally equipped with expert knowledge required to develop and manufacture it’s own experimental prototypes, metrology/sensors and the instrumentation of testing benches.

In the context of individually elaborated research contracts, we are happy to provide you with the expertise of our staff and offer you the possibility to use the technical facilities (test facilities, machines, computing clusters) of the TFD. If you are interested in a joint project, please contact us.
