Guidelines for the supervision of student research projects and theses

On this page you will find basic information on the supervision of theses and dissertations at the TFD - from agreeing on topics and formal registration to special requirements for external theses.

General information on supervision

Student research projects and theses at the TFD are supervised by academic staff at the institute. As soon as you have found a suitable topic, please contact the relevant supervisor directly to agree on the supervision.

Procedure and preparation of the support

Once the TFD has approved the topic, the following steps are required:

  1. Preparation of the assignment

Together with your supervisor, you create a written assignment. This should clearly describe the topic, objectives, questions, methodology and time frame.

  2. Create a project plan

In addition to the assignment, formulate a project plan that presents the planned work steps and milestones in a structured manner.

  3. Submission for review

You must sign the assignment and project plan and submit them to Prof. Seume for review and signature.

Important!

The supervision only becomes binding once Prof. Seume has signed the assignment for your thesis.

Please note!

The prerequisite for registering a student research project or thesis at the TFD is the successful completion of the courseTutorium: LaTeX – Eine Einführung.

Theses in the industry or with your own topics

The TFD is also happy to support you with external theses (e.g. in companies) or with your own topic ideas - provided the following requirements are met:

  • Professional relevance:

The content of your topic must be in line with the TFD's main research areas. Topics outside the area of competence will be referred to other institutes of the faculty.

  • Preparatory work on the TFD:

Before starting a thesis, a laboratory and/or student research project at the TFD is usually required. This serves to get to know the research environment, gain initial practical experience and test the quality of the collaboration.

Only students with above-average marks for their preliminary work will be admitted to the final thesis at the TFD.
